Anna Clara Viana de Oliveira (2024). “2023 Annual Meeting of the Gypsy Lore Society and Conference on Romani Studies, São Paulo, Brazil, October 3–6, 2023”, Český Lid 111(1): 116-119.
The annual conference for the year 2023 was held in São Paulo, Brazil from October 3 to 6. The conference focused on various innovative methodological approaches, the different aspects of antigypsyism, and the situation of Romani people outside Europe. The conference program comprised of six keynote lectures, 110 paper presentations, two film screenings, and a performance by Marcelo Cigano and his band. This conference was the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and it served as a testament to the growing scholarly interest in Romani Studies in Latin America over the last few decades. Moreover, the conference served as a platform for Brazilian scholars to present their work to an international audience. The event was open to both academic and non-academic audiences and was held in SESC São Paulo, which generally offers courses focused on commerce or cultural activities designed for the broader public. The conference therefore attracted people who might not have been familiar with Romani Studies.
