Discussing the Collection of Racial or Ethnic Data in Official Statistics

Tina Magazzini was invited to discuss the paper “Who Counts in Official Statistics? Ethical-Epistemic Issues in German Migration and the Collection of Racial or Ethnic Data” by Daniel James, Morgan Thompson and Tereza Hendl. The Romani History Seminar, which organized the event, aims at bringing together specialists in Romani history and scholars from related fields to provide collective feedback on ongoing historiographical work.

The issue of data collection for ethnic minorities is a contentious one that on the one hand holds the potential to help redress past injustices, but also carries risks of further discrimination.
