Filmmaking research methods and minority narratives

From 13-24 November 2023 the online film festival “Screening the Social” showcases interdisciplinary and cutting-edge ways of using the moving image in social research.

7 short films from Film Geographies are featured along with the films from the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland and curated films from other progressive platforms. Among the featured shorts is “A Coney Island of the Mind“, a (very) short film by Tina Magazzini that plays with the wording of an official document from 1912 in which Italian immigrants to the US are described as socially undesirable and violent. Playing with the trope of the talking-heads interview, the film raises questions about the continuation of such xenophobic discourses towards other racialized minorities today.
